Here at the clinic, I have been trying something new and now Clare is gearing up to join me…
Over the next few weeks you’ll be able to follow our journey as we see what it’s like to cut out sugar from our lives. But, before we do that, here’s a little bit of history on sugar and some of the reasons why you might want to join us!
Sugar can be found in many forms, some of which are more harmful to our bodies than others. The worst of these is fructose, which can typically be found in juices, fizzy drinks or other products as high fructose corn syrup.
If we jump back in time to around 1916; the average western diet contained around 15 grams of fructose. This was mainly consumed as whole fruit, where the fibre and other nutritional content help to stabilise the sugar. Around 1 in 4 of our modern diets now contains over 135g of fructose every day! That’s a near 10-time increase in daily intake over the past 100 years!
Now, why is this such a problem?
High sugar intake can cause many health issues including heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer. In fact, research has estimated that sugary drinks alone accounts for around 183,000 deaths worldwide each year.
So as we come into February and the good intentions of the New Year fade away, we would like to invite you to follow Clare and I as we try to ditch the sugar. I’m sure this will not be easy, so keep a close eye on our Facebook page and the blog to see how we get on.
Wish us luck!
Sarah 🙂
