Last month we talked about finding your “why” and how it is critical to ingraining new healthy habits. For instance, if your resolution is to exercise regularly it might be to have more energy and a stronger back so that you can play a sport and/or with your children.
In this blog, we will cover some practical steps on how to prepare to start your healthy habit of exercising regularly.
What type of Exercise?
Pick an exercise that you will enjoy. Think about what type of sports you like most? For example do you like a team sport or do you prefer to exercise on your own? It might be you enjoy the solitude of a run in nature to be with your thoughts. Are you competitive and prefer to set your own goals and work towards achieving those! Do you like a gym environment or to be outside in nature? Maybe you prefer vigorous aerobic exercise or resistance/weightlifting type of training or do you prefer a slower pace such as Yoga? Do you prefer listening to quiet/loud music, educational talks (or audio books) while exercising? If you like music, why not treat yourself to a pair of headphones?
There is no right or wrong.
Make it Easy
Once you have chosen your preferred exercise it’s important to make it as easy as possible to do. This might include going to the gym that’s on the way home from work, running in your locality or picking an activity that does not require equipment.
Consistency
At the beginning consistency is more important than quantity, so if you can achieve twice a week to go for a 10 minute walk, this is better than setting an unrealistic goal of an hour at the gym four times a week. Also, pick a regular time and day of the week and let people know that this time is reserved for exercise and you will be unavailable.
Get Your Kit Ready
Make sure you have all the kit you need and it is prepared the night before. Sounds like a great excuse for a shopping spree?
Good luck with your preparation and watch out for the next blog about how to put all your preparation into action.
