Display screen work e.g. computer, tablets etc. affects a large number of workers every year. According to the Health and Safety Executive muscle and joint problems e.g. neck, shoulder, back pain is by far the most commonly reported work related illness related to Display Screen use, with an estimated 1,108,000 people ever employed affected. Given the high number of people suffering from neck and shoulder pains and the Health and Safety Legislation subsequently surrounding this topic, it is important for staff and managers to be DSE compliant.
Here at Headingley Chiropractic Clinic we have also found there to be a high rate of patients adversely affected by using PCs, laptops and tablets. So much so that we decided to undertake an intensive course on office workstation ergonomics which also covered topics such layout of desk, chair position and mouse, screen and keyboard set up and other related topics. This course was held by the Association of Chartered physiotherapists in Occupational Health and Ergonomics and aims to give health practitioners the ability to assess and improve the workstation.
